Snooker is Fun to Learn and Play

Are you up for a game of snooker? In the United States, there are plenty of people who have not heard of this fantastic game based on billiards. All over the rest of the world, players choose snooker as the game of choice in billiards halls and pool rooms. And on the telly in England, it is the most watched sports program. So Americans are somewhat behind in recognizing this game.

Snooker started as a simple variation of pool. Called "pyramid pool" by regulars, the game was basically a variation on the "life" and "black" games of pool. The popularity of snooker really began to gain steam when Sir Neville Chamberlain, a regiment soldier in India, modified it around 1875. Soldiers in the English military enjoyed the game, and its popularity continued to grow until had reached its modern prestigious spot in England.

Newcomers may find it a bit intimidating to learn snooker, but the actual rules are not that complicated. Perhaps the most difficult part is setting the table properly:

* Snooker tables are full sized billiards tables measuring 6 feet by 12 feet.

* Snooker balls make up a set of 22. Fifteen red balls are the minions of the game, while the white cue ball is used to strike with. And one ball of each of 6 colors: blue, brown, black, pink, green, and yellow.

* Place the green, brown, and yellow balls side by side at one end of the table. Give them a gap of about six inches. In the exact center of the pool table goes the blue ball. Pink goes between the blue ball and the far end of the table. There is a special marked spot for the black ball, and it is about 13 inches from the top cushion.

* The 15 red balls are grouped into a triangle, with the aid of a racking device, and then are placed just behind the pink ball. Come close to the pink but don't touch it.

Now let's play snooker! The "break" is a sharp strike by one player into the group of red balls. From then on, when a red ball is sunk into a pocket, the player is allowed to follow up with an attempt to sink any of the six colored balls. Each colored ball has an assigned number of points: yellow is two points, green next at three points, brown brings four, blue is good for five, pink is six, and finally black is worth seven points. When a colored ball is counted, retrieve the ball and carefully place it back on the table in its original spot for further play.

Snooker also comes in several different varieties, which are fun to try after one has mastered the main game. Snooker is not dreadfully hard to learn, but the rules can drag down newcomers somewhat, so it is always best to find an expert who can explain the rules and show you how to count the points and replace the balls onto the table.

For more than a century, snooker has been a beloved sport in England and many other countries. And with good reason! It is fun, easy to play, and yet demanding of skills as one progresses. If you already own a regulation sized pool table, why not get a set of snooker balls, and add a new game to your repertoire?

As with everything else in life, sometimes we fall into habits in how we wear our jewelry.

We put the brooch on out left shoulder, we wear the same necklace with the same dress and the same earrings.

This article will help stimulate your thinking about how you wear jewelry. It's not exhaustive -- if you have other ideas of better ways to use jewelry, let me know.

Pins are perhaps the most versatile of jewelry. In addition to the usual shoulder or lapel, they are often worn with scarves. Try these other ways of wearing your pins to extend your jewelry vocabulary.

Pins on hats. Wearing a pin on a hat has a very long tradition As hats become popular once again we can start making use of this great old technique.

You can pin the brooch on the hatband or higher up on the crown of the hat, or use it to hold up part of the brim (If your hat has a brim). Use a whole circle of pins around the hatband for a charming effect (especially effective with animal jewelry). Make a whole menagerie for your hat. Play with your animal jewelry brooches as if your were playing jungle as a child.

Pins can also be worn on belts and handbags. Try a pin on your belt a bit off to one side. If it's a belt with a simple or self buckle, this can add just the bit of extra interest you need (especially if you have a slim waist to show off).

Putting a brooch on an old handbag can give it new life. You can also take a plain purse and dress it up for evening by the addition of a brooch or two.

Brooches can be added to hair clips to make a one of a kind hair ornament. Or string your favorite brooch on a cord. By knotting the cord and tying the brooch in the middle you can keep many pins upright and hanging correctly. You now have a whole new pendant.

Try a line of 3 or 4 brooches running down the thigh of your jeans. Or group several brooches across your bodice like a necklace.

You can even use brooches on your shoes, if they are of the right sort. This is an unusual technique that's sure to get you noticed.

Rings, of course, can be worn on chains around your neck as well as on your fingers. In the Renaissance they used to make very large rings specifically to be worn around the neck (they were too big for anyone but a giant to wear on their fingers).

You can also weave rings into your hair. Whether you have long hair or short, you can put the ring very close to your scalp and then braid it in. This is a fun technique to give a little sparkle and curiosity to an otherwise commonplace hairdo.

Of course necklaces are great woven into hair too. This is a technique that's been practiced for centuries. During the time of the Louis's, French women had elaborate wigs with necklaces already woven in. Queen Elizabethan (and other Renaissance ladies) also wore necklaces with strings of jewels woven into her elaborate hairdos.

If you have some long necklaces that unclip, try weaving them around a belt before putting it on. You can secure the ends with a small piece of tape or tie them on with a big of colored string. This can make a plain black dress upscale evening attire. A great tip for travelers.

If you have a charm bracelet or three, try adding a chain or cord to each end and wearing it as a necklace -- fun and tres chic.

The SoHo experience

New York has a life of its own and everyone who visits this city that never sleeps is guaranteed an experience of a lifetime. However, New York is not simply one big city but made up of a number of different places and locations all creating one big melting pot of culture.

SoHo is one such location. SoHo which is the shorten form for South of Houston is now well known as the place for the arts. It was during the 1960’s that artists moved to SoHo to the abandoned buildings which had perfect ‘lofts’, the ideal space for artists. These buildings were pre-mid 20th century industrial buildings such as small factories and sweatshops.

During this industrial period SoHo was referred to as Hell’s Hundred Acres and was basically a wasteland. Prior to this the area was over run with brothels and bars compared to anywhere else in the city. These abandoned buildings were as said before ideal for artists to be creative. The large well lit lofty spaces were perfect for canvasses and such artist paraphernalia.

By the 70s SoHo had become a residential area and a popular artistic zone. It is nowadays a hip and happening place visited by many who wish to have an aesthetic experience. The area is bordered by Greenwich Village to the north and by Little Italy to the east and towards southwest is Chinatown which makes a visit to SoHo a culturally enriching experience.

It is easy to access the trains from near the hotel to visit the landmark attractions of New York such as the Empire State Building, Times Square, the Museum of Modern Arts and Ground Zero. The classic Guggenheim Museum is also worth a visit with its unique architecture though it was considered by most as less than successful as a gallery. With its soft while colour and spiral shape this building attracts a lot of attention.

SoHo is full of beautiful cobblestone streets and has art galleries, restaurants, branded fashion shops all housed in historic cast-iron buildings. The area is abundant with restaurants such as Nabu or Café Café which is a coffee and health food café or the SoHo bar and lounge which attracts a large crowd and plays old school music and classics.

Modern SoHo is however no longer the cheap haven for artists that it used to be and most artist lofts are very expensive. This has resulted in many moving to the nearby TriBeCa, though SoHo will always remain as the heart and soul of the artistic community. SoHo has the ability to make an art lover out of all who visit with its alluring galleries and bohemian qualities. The famous Hudson River is on the west of SoHo.
