If You Aren't Having Fun It's Your Own Dang Fault

Your life really is in your own hands. Life is a blank slate that you can do many different things with. Opportunities come and go and you choose to take them or leave them. How you respond and react to circumstances is almost entirely up to you.

I was chatting with a few Octogenarians the other day and it was interesting watching them and listening to them. One of them is known to always be fun to spend time with and it is easy to see why. She grasps life with both hands and sets out upon each day with intent to enjoy herself. The result is not only that she has a good time, but those who come into contact with her also benefit from her good spirits.

I happened to overhear this lady say her companions the exact phrase that I have used as a title for this short piece. She simply doesn't let anything darken her day or dampen her spirits. She has a great attitude and life is so much easier to one who tackles each day in this manner.

If you set out with the express intent of having fun and enjoying whatever life presents, your optimism will ensure that you only see the good things and instinctively gloss over those that are bad. I think that we all know the effect of focusing closely on one thing to the exclusion of another.

For example, when you close your eyes so as to listen more closely to a piece of music, you will find that your hearing improves. Your extra focus has the effect of highlighting whatever it is that is in your spotlight.

Similarly, if you focus upon how much effort it takes to do something, or how much your arm hurts, or how sore your back is, each of these things will be magnified and will feel a whole lot worse. Conversely, if you focus on having fun and how easy life is, these effects will be magnified in exactly the same way.

Once you realize this effect, that what you focus on tends to be highlighted and magnified, you hold the key to choosing your experiences. Every experience is always subjective.

An experience is not just the pure fact of what is happening. Rather, an experience is the effect of your chosen perception of that reality. Whatever you expect to see is what tends to happen to you. Therefore, to set out each morning with the intent to have fun is bound to make life both easier and more enjoyable.

Hence the comment which this bright and intelligent lady made; if you aren't having fun, it's your own dang fault. If you find that your mind tends towards the negative in life, you can easily do something about it. If your thought processes are instinctively negative and pessimistic you might find that hypnosis is a useful aid.

1) Spousal Support

There are significant stresses and strains placed on a relationship during a move overseas. Chances are at least one in the partnership will be embarking on a new job, taking on different responsibilities and meeting new people…the other spouse may well have to take on the burden of getting accommodation sorted out, dealing with the necessary bureaucracy and getting the family unit into a routine alone. The sooner you can get in a situation where you’re meeting new people the sooner you’ll be in a position to make friends and the sooner you’ll have people there who can support you, offer advice and even show you around the best bits of your new host country. So, take a deep breathe and go out to expat events or popular bars and start networking!

4) Finding Familiarity

Your new house will feel like a home when you are 100% familiar with it, your local surroundings and the people who live nearby. And while it is hard to speed up the familiarizing process too much, you can make an effort to ensure it is progressing as fast as it can! Find local shops, hairdressers, dentists, doctors, schools, pubs and restaurants straight away. Drive round, walk round and learn where all the amenities, facilities and services are in the local area. Get to know your way around easily, and then slowly but surely everything will seem so familiar to you that when you return to your house after work or a day away you’ll feel like you’re returning home - then you will feel 100% happy and secure in your new environment.

5) Getting Stuck In

The sooner you make that first trip in the car alone the sooner you’ll know your way around. The sooner you approach that group of strangers at the party the sooner you’ll make friends. The sooner you get the bureaucracy in motion the sooner you’ll be a legal resident. The sooner you look for work the sooner you’ll have financial security. You’ve made the decision to live abroad – so don’t put your new life on hold once you make the move – get out there, get stuck in and start living and loving your new life.

Finding A New Job Quickly

Today’s working environment is unpredictable. Economic downturns can arrive at any moment. Redundancy can swiftly follow. No-one is fully immune, and severance payoffs do not last for ever.

If you found yourself in that situation tomorrow could you cope? If you had to find yourself another job quickly in order to pay the bills, could you do it?

Here are the steps to follow.

1. Identify Your Skills

2. Analyse Your List

3. Identify The Job Sources

4. Take Action

1. Identify Your Skills

Think hard about what you are good at, and about what you enjoy. Since you usually enjoy what you do well, the two are often the same. Think back over your career to date and dig deep into the experiences you have had and the skills you have acquired.

List them all on paper. Leave nothing out. Be as objective and honest as you can. Don’t put something down just because you think it is what you need in today’s employment market place. Only put it down if it is a skill that you have here and now. Don’t forget, you are looking here at how to get a job quickly. You are not planning your long term training needs.

Think in terms of three main divisions of skill and divide up your list accordingly.

Firstly there are physical skills.

These are skills of aptitude, of working with your hands, manipulative skills, mechanical skills. These are skills required in a wide range of manual and hands-on jobs. Sometimes these skills have been acquired by way of a hobby rather than paid employment, but a hobby that can at some stage become the grounding for a new career doing something that you really enjoy. Don’t ignore these leisure-acquired skills.

Secondly there are knowledge based skills.

These are academic skills gained by formal study. These are skills gained as a result of book learning and training courses. These are specific technical skills related to a particular function. This is specialist knowledge absorbed as a result of working in a particular industry.

Thirdly there are people skills.

These are the team skills, the relational skills, the ability to get on with and work with other people. These are the skills of management. The skills of leading a team, the skills of winning arguments and convincing others.

2. Analyse Your List.

Now look at your list. See where you strengths lie. Think what you would like to do using those strengths. Decide on the job you would like using those strengths.

Be honest. Once again you must remember that your objective is to get another job in the shortest possible delay. Don’t base your hopes on skills you would like to have. Plan on using what you already have.

If your main skills are manual, base your plans on this. If you are more suited to a technical analytical job, go in this direction. If your aptitudes lie towards managing people and getting the best from a team, steer yourself that way. Play to your strengths.

3. Identify the sources

The easiest way to find jobs these days is on the internet. Just enter ‘job site’ or ‘employment agency’ or ‘job search’ into your search engine and see what you get. Your problem will be restricting the results to a manageable size. Limit your research by country or city or industry as appropriate in order to cut it down.

If you have a particular company in mind look on its web site if it has one. Companies often advertise vacancies there.

Look too at the principal newspapers of the geographic region in which you are looking. Again this could be country or it could be city. They can be a good source.

Finally there are your local agencies at which you can enrol.

4. Take Action.

This is when it all comes together.

Put your CV onto as many online jobsites as you can. It will be found by potential employers who will then come to you. This puts your name and qualifications up before a large number of employers quickly and easily.

Search the sites and newspapers and apply to as many job offers as meet your criteria. Adapt your CV to suit each application emphasising the particular skills and experience requested. Play the numbers game. If it looks suitable – apply. (But don’t waste your time on jobs that don’t fit your qualities).

Don’t be afraid to send out speculative letters to companies you like. You can often strike lucky, and your application is more likely to be seen when writing in this way.

Above all, keep going. Don’t give up. By knowing exactly what you are looking for and targeting your applications you stand a good chance of success.

In conclusion.

If you have not yet been forced to look for a new job it would not do you any harm to carry out the exercise of examining your skills. You will at least be forearmed should the need arise.

If you have lost your previous job, try to look on your situation as an opportunity rather than a disaster. This could be your chance to set out again in the direction you really want to go instead of carrying on indefinitely stuck in the rut into which you previously fell more by accident than design.

It's too valuable a ritual to treat it as simply maintenance.

Learning about your baby
Diapering offers a perfect opportunity for you to truly absorb your baby's cues and signals. You'll learn how his little body works, what tickles him, what causes those tiny goose bumps. As you lift, move, and touch your baby, your hands will learn the map of his body and what's normal for him. This is important because it will enable you to easily decipher any physical changes that need attention.

Developing trust
Regular diaper changes create rhythm in your baby's world and afford the sense that the world is safe and dependable. They are regular and consistent episodes in days that may not always be predictable. Your loving touches teach your baby that he is valued, and your gentle care teaches him that he is respected.

A learning experience for your baby
Your baby does a lot of learning during diaper changes. Diaper-off time is a great chance for her to stretch her limbs and learn how they move.

During changing time, your baby is also a captive audience to your voice, so she can focus on what you are saying and how you are saying it — an important component of her language learning process. Likewise, for a precious few minutes, you are her captive audience, so you can focus on what she's saying and how she is saying it — crucial to the growth of your relationship.

What your baby thinks and feels
Many active babies could not care less if their diapers are clean. They're too busy to concern themselves with such trivial issues. It may be important to you, but it's not a priority for your child.

Diaper rash or uncomfortable diapers (wrong size or bad fit) can make him dread diaper changes, so check these first. Once you're sure all the practical issues are covered, make a few adjustments in this unavoidable process to make it more enjoyable.

Take a deep breath
Given the number of diapers you have to change, it's possible that what used to be a pleasant experience for you has gotten to be routine, or even worse, a hassle. When parents approach diaper changing in a brisk, no-nonsense way, it isn't any fun for Baby. Try to reconnect with the bonding experience that diaper changing can be -- a moment of calm in a busy day when you share one-on-one time with your baby.

Have some fun
This is a great time to sing songs, blow tummy raspberries, or do some tickle and play. A little fun might take the dread out of diaper changes for both of you. A game that stays fresh for a long time is "hide the diaper." Put a new diaper on your head, on your shoulder, or tucked in your shirt and ask, "Where's the diaper? I can't find it!" A fun twist is to give the diaper a name and a silly voice, and use it as a puppet. Let the diaper call your child to the changing station and have it talk to him as you change it. (If you get tired of making Mister Diaper talk, just remember what it was like before you tried the idea.)

Use distraction
Keep a flashlight with your changing supplies and let your baby play with it while you change him. Some kids' flashlights have a button to change the color of the light, or shape of the ray. Call this his "diaper flashlight" and put it away when the change is complete. You may find a different type of special toy that appeals to your little one, or even a basket of small interesting toys. If you reserve these only for diaper time, they can retain their novelty for a long time.

Try a stand-up diaper
If your baby's diaper is just wet (not messy), try letting her stand up while you do a quick change. If you're using cloth diapers, have one leg pre-pinned so that you can slide it on like pants, or opt for pre-fitted diapers that dont require pins.

Bored Of Half-Board? Why All-Inclusive Holidays Could Save You Money

For many people, booking the annual two-week break away from home is the highlight of the year, and a chance to pore over numerous glossy brochures in order to select the next destination and collect another stamp in the passport.

People’s ideas of a holiday differ, and as a result so do their requirements – especially where kids are involved! For childless couples, something away from the norm such as a cruise or adventure holiday might be the order of the day, while family holidays are much more likely to centre on the beach and surrounding facilities, as well as those found in the hotel.

Depending on where you go on holiday, the accommodation and board options you choose can have a huge bearing on your holiday budget and even the activities you get up to while you’re there.

For example, choosing a self-catering holiday means you and your family are only paying for your flights and accommodation in your chosen resort. As a result, it is up to you to budget for all other costs, such as food and drink and entertainment. Many self-catering hotels come equipped with a restaurant and bar area so that guests can dine in the hotel, but also allow guests the option of eating in their hotel room with self-supplied food and drink bought from local shops if they prefer; while many onsite entertainments such as mini-arcades, table tennis and pool tables are liable to incur a small charge for their use. Swimming pools are usually free of charge, but there may be a levy to pay if you want to hire a li-lo or pool-toy.

Away from the hotel, the beauty of self-catering accommodation, however, is the fact that you aren’t tied down to any specific mealtimes. This means that you are free to indulge in whatever activity takes your fancy on any given day without having to worry about getting back to the hotel in time for your evening meal. You can also dine away from the hotel in any of the resort’s restaurants if you so desire, at any time of day or night – or at least until they close!

However, an undoubted downside to self-catering is the potential to overspend your budget. It’s all too easy to eat out more often than you may have planned, or over-indulge the kids with cooling ice-creams and drinks throughout the day, and so a level of fiscal prudence while on a self-catering holiday is paramount. No-one wants to get to the end of their first week away, and discover that the holiday purse-strings will need to be tightened to get through the second week, which would certainly put a dampener on the holiday spirit!

With this in mind, half-board holidays might provide a better option. Half-board accommodation is in many respects similar to self-catering accommodation, but with the added benefit that meals are provided. You’ll still have to fork out for entertainments, drinks and the odd ice-cream, but at you’ll be safe in the knowledge that you’ll still be fed, even if the money starts to dry up! However, for many on half-board holidays, the desire to explore their surroundings is often reduced because meals are already bought and paid for, so there is added emphasis on staying close by to the hotel – especially if mealtimes are restricted.

Perhaps the best option for families then, is to consider taking an all-inclusive holiday instead. All-inclusive holidays combine the best features of self-catering and half-board accommodation, and although slightly pricier to book, their provision often means that holidaymakers can actually save more than they would booking either self-catering or half-board accommodation once holiday spending is taken into account.

All-inclusive holidays often consist of unlimited use of hotel facilities and entertainments, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks throughout the day, snacks and ice cream for children, and all meals throughout the day, although there may still be a small charge for certain facilities such as cable TV or air-conditioning. Other facilities may be available under the all-inclusive banner, depending on the destination and hotel where you are staying. Meals can normally be taken at any time during the hotel restaurant’s opening hours, whereas guests staying on self-catering or half-board basis may be limited to certain times of the day. This means that even though meals have been paid for, there is greater flexibility as to when they can be taken, and so all-inclusive guests aren’t tethered to the hotel steps as they might otherwise be with other board options. There’s also no obligation to use the all-inclusive facilities and offerings; it’s very much a take-or-leave scenario, and even choosing to lunch or dine in the resort rather than the hotel on occasion won’t cancel out the savings that can be made, and the all-inclusive offerings will still be there waiting for you the next day.

All-inclusive holidays aren’t available in every hotel, however, so if you are considering an all-inclusive holiday, it’s always best to double-check that your chosen resort and accommodation offers an option for this. Remember too, that although the price quoted in the brochure may seem a steep jump compared to cheaper board options, there’s a good chance that once you’ve arrived you’ll spend at least the difference while you’re there, so be sure to consider your overall holiday budget and choose the right level of accommodation for your needs.

So if you’re bored of half-board, and sick of self-catering, then all-inclusive holidays might just provide the perfect holiday blend!
